Chapter 1: God Is at Work

Opening two paragraphs from the manuscript.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and earth” (Genesis 1:1). Right from the beginning, God was at work. The very first words of the Bible mention God working on His creation. This says a lot about the nature of God and the importance that God places on work. After all, if the Creator is working and places a high value on work, shouldn’t we?

In fact, later in Genesis, God states that we should be working as well. “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2:15). Part of our reason for being is to honor God through our labor. God mentions work close to four hundred times in the Bible. One would conclude that if it is important to God, it should be important to us. If God wants us to work, does this not mean He will assist us in accomplishing this task? Of course He will, but it also requires faith on our part to believe the promises of God.
